Also if you provide services such as editing or cover design, promote yourself and add links to examples of your work for others to review! :-)

Ooh! I might be available to edit. It's a good way to supplement the smutbucks.

Don't say that too loudly...poor Laura is doing me a favor right now and trying to edit a new author's book, and saying the woman's writing is awful is being very complimentary. LOL

Ooh! I might be available to edit. It's a good way to supplement the smutbucks. Let's talk....I have a project, but its a looong one. Jo edited the first book in the series, but this one is much longer and she has a lot of other commitments.

What's the typical practice for poor writing? When I worked as an EIC I'd smooth out sentences in addition to fixing grammar and typos, but for fiction I imagine writers are a little more protective of their work. Unless they're total hacks just trying to gather some of that smut biz...

Unless they're total hacks just trying to gather some of that smut biz... First, let's just say if I can vastly improve someone's grammar? They're pretty much writing at a grammar school level. This piece I took on for Jo-the only way she'll publish it, and the author has been very helpful-is horrible. Not just grammar, but there is no flow at all to this story...there were no names, it was he/she all the way through. No physical descriptions. So in addition to the grammar I'm adding sentences to give it something, while removing a lot of...crap. First time I've ever edited for someone. Has me thinking it may be the last.

She's beyond horrible. Forget grammar school level, she's barely literate. It's really a shame, too, because she seems like a nice person. The only reason I agreed to look at her work was because she's been so good to you, Laura, reposting your tweets and all to help you make sales. It's giving you a greater appreciation of how much work I do editing your paperbacks, doesn't it? LOL
I have a ton of experience editing for authors and non-authors, and you're right, Veronica...authors are much more protective of their work than "normal" people. Oh, the wailing and gnashing of teeth if you change one tiny thing (even though they asked you to "fix" it)! Thankfully Laura is the exception to this and so many other rules. ;-)
If you're looking for information about editing rates:
Light editing (a few minor changes every few paragraphs) is generally $1.00 per page, or approximately 200 words.
More involved editing where a lot of punctuation and spelling needs fixing generally runs between $1.50 to $2.00 per page, and I suspect a lot of that variance depends on the editor's frustration levels.
The kind of editing Laura's tackling can run anywhere from $2.50 to $3.00 per page...and believe me, you'll work for every penny. Every sentence needs to be rewritten from scratch to make any sense. It's one of the reasons I really hate editing, even though I'm very good at it; I used to be a proofreader/editor in a prior life. I burned out very quickly on editing fiction, and now only take on the occasional project for close friends.

Thanks, Jo, that helps a lot. Laura and I were discussing rates on Twitter and I wasn't sure what fiction industry standards are. Most of my experience is in articles, essays, etc.
